How much space does a Robinson R44 need to land and take off?
A Robinson R44 is a capable single-engine Helicopter that will carry up to 3 passengers plus the pilot. The helicopter is effectively the lowest-cost helicopter operating on public transport in the UK.
The landing and take of space requirements on public transport, i.e. a commercial operator’s license are a lot more than a private plot requires. This is simply because of safety and a commercial operator will conduct every flight in absolute safety.
The safe space required to operate the Robinson R44 is 100m x 300m without any overhanging obstructions i.e. overhead cable, large trees or buildings. Whilst this sounds a lot it’s actually quite a small area and does give the helicopter access to a lot of prime landing sites.

Choosing a landing site for a charter helicopter
The 100 m by 300 m figure above is the conservative public-transport requirement for a Robinson R44; it allows the pilot a clear approach and climb-out path on both sides of the landing point. In practice a large garden, a paddock or a sports field often meets it, and our pilots assess every new site from aerial photographs before the flight. Obstacles matter more than the raw dimensions: power lines, tall trees and buildings on the approach path are what rule a site out.
Twin-engine helicopters need less, not more
It surprises many clients that the larger twin-engine helicopters such as the Agusta 109 and the EC135 can use smaller sites than a single-engine R44. With two engines the aircraft can climb away safely if one fails, so the rules allow a steeper approach and a tighter site. If your garden is on the small side, a twin may be the answer rather than a problem.
Permission and practicalities
- The landowner’s permission is required for any private site.
- Sites inside controlled airspace, near airports or in built-up areas may need prior notification.
- Livestock should be moved away from the landing area, and the surface should be firm and reasonably level.
