Depending on the aircraft, a private jet can fly between roughly 1,000 and 7,700 nautical miles without stopping. Light jets manage 1,000–2,000nm, super-midsize jets around 3,000–4,000nm, and ultra-long-range jets such as the Gulfstream G650 exceed 7,000nm — far enough to fly London to Tokyo non-stop.

Charter-A Ltd is a UK private jet and helicopter charter company. We’ve been arranging private jet charter since 2011 from London airports including Luton, Farnborough, Biggin Hill and Stansted, and we place every class of jet covered in this guide. The ranges below reflect what these aircraft genuinely achieve on the routes we book — not just the manufacturer’s brochure.
What decides how far a private jet can actually fly?
The figure printed in a spec sheet assumes ideal conditions: light load, favourable winds, generous runways. Real trips rarely oblige. Four things move the number on the day:
- Payload. Fuel and weight trade against each other — every passenger and bag on a smaller jet is fuel the aircraft can’t carry.
- Wind. The North Atlantic jet stream can add or subtract an hour. A winter westbound crossing can knock several hundred miles off practical range.
- Airports. Short runways limit take-off weight, which limits fuel. The same jet leaves Biggin Hill with less fuel than it leaves Stansted.
- Reserves. Every flight must land with enough fuel to divert and hold — that margin is regulatory, and it comes off the top.
This is why we quote range as a band rather than a single number, and why the right aircraft for a route sometimes surprises clients.
How far can a light jet fly without stopping?
Most light jets cover 1,000–2,000 nautical miles non-stop. The Embraer Phenom 300E, one of the most requested aircraft in our network, sits at the top of the class at roughly 2,000nm. From London that puts Paris (about 45 minutes airborne), Geneva (1h 35m), Nice (1h 55m) and Ibiza (2h 10m) comfortably within reach on one tank.
For UK and Mediterranean trips a light jet is usually the value choice — you get the airfield flexibility and door-to-door speed without paying for cabin and range you won’t use. Our guide to private jet charter costs shows how the classes compare in practice.
How far can a midsize or super-midsize jet fly?
Midsize and super-midsize jets typically manage 2,000–4,000 nautical miles. A Challenger 350 offers around 3,200nm; the Praetor 600 stretches past 4,000nm. From London that opens Athens, Marrakech, Tenerife, Istanbul and much of the Middle East non-stop, with a stand-up cabin and roughly double the luggage space of a light jet.

Can a private jet cross the Atlantic without stopping?
Yes — with the right aircraft. London to New York is about 3,000 nautical miles: 7.5–8.5 hours westbound against the jet stream, closer to 6.5–7 coming home with it. Long-range jets — Gulfstream G550, Global 6000, Falcon 7X and up — do it routinely. Super-midsize jets can make it in the right conditions, but on a January westbound with a full cabin the honest answer is often a 40-minute fuel stop at Shannon or Gander. We’d rather plan that than promise a non-stop the winds won’t allow.
If the east coast of the United States is the mission, see our guide to flying by private jet to New York, or explore long-range private jets for the aircraft that make the crossing trivial.
What are the longest-range private jets you can charter?
At the top of the market, ultra-long-range jets stay airborne for 15–17 hours. These are the aircraft we reach for when a client wants to board in London and step off on another continent:
| Aircraft | Approx. max range | Example non-stop from London |
| Bombardier Global 7500 | 7,700 nm | Singapore or Los Angeles |
| Gulfstream G650ER | 7,500 nm | Tokyo or Cape Town |
| Gulfstream G650 | 7,000 nm | Tokyo |
| Gulfstream G550 | 6,750 nm | Los Angeles |
| Dassault Falcon 8X | 6,450 nm | Johannesburg |
Ranges assume typical loads and conditions; strong headwinds or a full cabin trim them. For a closer look at the class benchmark, read our Gulfstream G650 charter guide.
Does a longer flight always mean a bigger jet?
Usually, but not automatically. A couple flying London to Paris and eight passengers flying London to Dubai are different problems: the first is solved by almost anything in the fleet, the second needs roughly 3,000nm of range with that load on board — heavy jet territory, around seven hours non-stop. (Our Dubai to London by private jet guide covers that route in detail.) We size the aircraft to the trip: route, headcount, luggage, season. Paying for 7,000nm of range on a 900nm flight rarely makes sense.

Frequently asked questions
Can a private jet fly from London to New York without stopping?
Yes. Long-range jets such as the Gulfstream G550, Bombardier Global 6000 and Dassault Falcon 7X fly London to New York non-stop in around 7.5–8.5 hours westbound. Super-midsize jets can manage it in favourable conditions, but strong winter headwinds sometimes force a fuel stop at Shannon or Gander, so we match the aircraft to the season as well as the route.
How long can a private jet stay in the air?
A light jet typically flies for up to 4 hours, a super-midsize jet for 5–6 hours, and an ultra-long-range jet such as the Bombardier Global 7500 for as long as 15–17 hours. Crew duty limits and passenger comfort usually shape very long itineraries as much as the aircraft itself does.
What is the longest-range private jet available to charter?
The Bombardier Global 7500 currently leads the charter market with a maximum range of around 7,700 nautical miles, followed closely by the Gulfstream G650ER at about 7,500 nautical miles. Both can connect London with Singapore, Tokyo or the west coast of the United States non-stop in the right conditions.
Does a full cabin reduce a private jet’s range?
Yes. Every passenger and bag adds weight, and on smaller jets that weight comes directly out of the fuel the aircraft can carry. A light jet flying with every seat filled may give up several hundred nautical miles of range compared with the brochure figure, which is why we always quote range for your actual load, not the ideal one.
How far can a light jet fly from London without stopping?
Most light jets have a practical non-stop range of 1,000–2,000 nautical miles, which comfortably covers Paris, Geneva, Nice, Ibiza and most of the Mediterranean from London. The Embraer Phenom 300E sits at the top of the class at roughly 2,000 nautical miles.
Why do private jets carry reserve fuel?
Regulations require every flight to land with enough fuel to divert to an alternate airport and hold before landing. Those reserves are non-negotiable, which is one reason an aircraft’s real-world range is always below the maximum printed in the manufacturer’s specification
